There is a quiet beauty to this home. Sunlight moves across deep blue millwork, soft neutrals, and sculptural furnishings, and every window becomes part of the story. Our task was to use custom Roman shades to shape light, add texture, all without obstructing the beautiful views. Room by room we adjusted fold style, mount, lining, and lift. Where daily use called for it, we introduced motorized Roman shades for effortless control.
Why Roman shades?
Roman shades offer a clean profile and compact stack that preserves trim and views. Flat fold reads crisp and tailored. Relaxed Roman adds a gentle curve. With privacy, light filtering, or blackout linings, they meet each room’s needs. Cordless and motorized controls keep operation simple and safe.
Deep blue millwork wraps a long run of windows of the sitting room. A series of flat fold Roman shades in a graphic woven pattern adds movement without bulk. Inside mounts fit neatly in the casing and privacy lining softens glare. Raised stacks align across the wall to keep the treetop sightline intact. Consistent fold style and matched hems create calm rhythm across multiple windows.

Built for sit-and-go comfort, this cushion uses a firmer foam density and a moisture resistant performance textile that wipes clean. We chose a small-scale pattern to disguise everyday wear and to echo the warm wood tones. A knife-edge profile with crisp corners keeps the look tailored without reading formal. Hidden zipper and a grippy underlay make upkeep simple and keep the cushion in place.

For a quieter mood in the primary bedroom, we crafted relaxed Roman shades with blackout lining. An outside mount widens coverage to reduce side light gaps and visually lifts the window height. The relaxed Romans bring softness and the blackout lining supports deep sleep.

In the primary bathroom, a flat Roman in linen filters daylight. A contrasting band frames the panel, turning a simple shade into a tailored detail and tying in the metal finishes. Lined for a mix of privacy and filtered light and sized to clear fixtures.

A sheer flat Roman reduces glare in the breakfast nook while keeping garden views open. The inside mount shows off the trimwork and keeps the profile refined. The bench features a tailored boxed seat cushion with self welt, a high resilience foam core with a soft wrap for comfort, and a performance fabric that resists stains and fading. Seat depth and cushion density were calibrated for dining posture, so it feels inviting without encouraging a slouch. Hidden zippers and a non-slip underlay make maintenance simple, while precise pattern direction and radius corner detailing give the piece a built in look.
Motorization that matters
Motorized Roman shades shine on tall windows, banks of casements, and spaces with frequent adjustments. Group controls move multiple shades together. Schedules support morning and evening routines. Smart home integration enables app and voice control. Cordless operation also improves safety and keeps the look clean.
Details that elevate
- Mounting: Inside mount for a built in look. Outside mount to increase coverage or scale the window.
- Lining: Privacy in shared spaces, blackout in bedrooms, privacy in baths.
- Craft: Centered pattern repeats, selective contrast banding, hand finished hems.
- Operation: A mix of cordless lifts and motorized Romans based on use.
Key project takeaways
Roman shades brought texture, control, and customization to every room. By varying fold style, mount, and lining, and adding motorization where helpful, the window plan feels unified and easy to live with.
